How to Spot Storm and Hail Damage on Your Roof (and Document It)
Indiana spring storms bring hail and high wind, and roof damage is not always obvious from the driveway. Here is what to look for and how to document it.

Wind damage
- Missing shingles, or shingles in the yard
- Lifted or creased shingles that have been bent back
- Loose or missing ridge caps
- Bent or pulled-away flashing and drip edge
Hail damage
- Dark spots or “bruises” where hail knocked granules off
- Dents in metal vents, gutters, downspouts and flashing
- Cracked or split shingles
- Granules washed out of downspouts after the storm
- Dings on siding, window wraps or outdoor equipment, which suggest the roof was hit too
How to document damage
- Note the date and time of the storm.
- Take wide and close-up photos from the ground: shingles in the yard, dented gutters, anything inside.
- Photograph any leaks or stains inside.
- Keep receipts for emergency repairs or tarps.
- Have a roofer inspect the roof and document what they find.
Stay off the roof. A roofer can inspect it safely.

Quick answers
Can hail damage be invisible from the ground?
Yes. Hail bruising is often only visible up close, which is why an inspection after a big storm is worth it.
Do you inspect roofs after storms?
Yes. We inspect after suspected wind or hail damage and document the roof’s condition for your insurance conversation. Your insurer decides what is covered.
