Roofing Permits, and What to Do If a Roofer Does Not Finish the Job
Two questions homeowners ask after the fact: did this job need a permit, and what can I do if the roofer disappears halfway through?

Do you need a permit?
It depends on where you live. Many Indiana communities require a building permit for a full roof replacement, while small repairs often do not need one. The rules vary by city and county, so check with your local building department, or ask your roofer whether they will pull any required permit.
What if a roofing job is not finished?
- Read your contract for the schedule and what it says about delays.
- Contact the roofer in writing and keep copies.
- Document the unfinished work with dated photos, and protect the house from weather.
- If you cannot resolve it, contact the Better Business Bureau or the Indiana Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
How to avoid it in the first place
- Hire a local company you can verify (see how to hire a roofer).
- Get a written contract with a schedule.
- Avoid paying the full amount up front.
