Ice Dams, Attic Ventilation and Gutters: Protecting an Indiana Roof
Some of the biggest threats to an Indiana roof have less to do with the shingles than with the attic and gutters.

How ice dams form
When warm air from the house heats the roof deck, snow melts and runs down to the colder eaves, where it refreezes. Over time that ice builds a ridge, a dam, that traps water behind it. The water can back up under the shingles and into the house.
Preventing ice dams
- Seal air leaks between the living space and the attic.
- Add attic insulation so less heat reaches the roof.
- Ventilate the attic so the roof deck stays cold.
- Keep gutters clear before winter.
- If ice dams form, call a professional. Chipping ice off a roof damages shingles and is dangerous.
Why attic ventilation matters
A balanced system, with intake vents low at the soffits and exhaust vents high near the ridge, keeps air moving through the attic. That limits summer heat that ages shingles from below, and winter moisture that can lead to mold and rotten decking.
Gutters and roof health
Clogged gutters hold water at the roof edge, where it can rot the fascia and decking and feed ice dams in winter. Clean them at least in late spring and late fall, and watch for granules piling up, a sign the shingles are wearing.
Summer vs. winter roof repairs
Warm, dry weather is ideal for roofing, and shingles seal down best in the heat. Repairs can still be done in winter when needed. A leak should not wait for spring, though very cold or wet days may affect scheduling.

Quick answers
Are ice dams a roofing problem or an attic problem?
Usually both. The attic causes them, and the roof takes the damage.
Should I put a heat cable on my roof?
Heat cables can help in trouble spots but do not fix the cause. Insulation, air sealing and ventilation are the long-term fix.
