How long does it take?

Many single-family asphalt roof replacements take about one to three days once work starts, depending on the size and steepness of the roof, the weather, and whether damaged decking is found. Small repairs are often done in a few hours. Scheduling, material delivery and weather can add time before work begins.

What happens on install day

  1. The crew protects the area around the house and sets up.
  2. The old roof is torn off and the decking is checked.
  3. Any damaged decking is replaced.
  4. Underlayment, flashing and new shingles or metal are installed.
  5. The site is cleaned up and the finished roof is inspected.

How to prepare your home

  • Move cars out of the driveway and garage area.
  • Move patio furniture, grills and planters away from the house.
  • Take down wall hangings on top-floor walls. Vibration can shake them loose.
  • Cover belongings in the attic to catch dust.
  • Plan for noise, and keep pets and kids away from the work area.
  • Make sure the crew can reach an outdoor outlet.

Protecting your home during the work

Ask your roofer how they protect landscaping, siding and windows, and how they clean up nails and debris. A good crew leaves the yard the way it found it.
